Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing brain health. Citing a news article that states suicides among U.S. soldiers is at an all time high. Doc asserts this is because the military is giving soldiers distilled water and MRE's that are devoid of nutrition. Contending that if soldiers were taking the 90 essential nutrients they would be much healthier.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a recent government report. For years the government has recommend those at higher risk of heart disease or stroke should limit sodium intake to 1500 milligrams or less. While recommending healthy individuals should limit their salt intake to 2300 milligrams or less. A report from theInstitute of Medicine is recommending that there is evidence the lowered salt intake for those at higher risk could do more harm than good.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing Celiac disease and the health benefits of a gluten free diet. Explaining that Celiac isn't a wheat allergy but more an intolerance. This intolerance manifests as an inflammatory reaction comparing it to a reaction to poison oak or ivy.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study on obesity. Researchers looked at differences between body temperatures of lean dogs compared to obese dogs. Finding the obese dogs had lower body temperatures leading the study authors to believe that the obese dogs were expending less energy to stay warm. Doc disagrees and contends that weight gain and obestiy are the result of nutritional deficiencies.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a new report on carbon dioxide levels. The highest levels yet ever recorded since records have been kept. Doc asserts the real problem is because less and less carbon dioxide being used by plants, plankton, kelp and algae. Contending this because of all of the rivers being damned preventing minerals getting to the ocean. Recommending that everyone listening should plant "victory" gardens to help consume more carbon dioxide.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning unwarranted medical screening tests. Hospitals are increasingly partnering with medical-screening companies. Using specially equiped buses to go out into the community and perform all sorts of medical screening tests such as ultra sound tests for blockages of the carotid artery, electrocardiograms, mammograms and PSA tests to name a few. Unfortunately close to half of those screened in one location which often leads to more tests, procedures and even surgery.

Dr. Wallach starts the show talking about surgical procedures that are unwarranted. Outlining several studies that support his argument that knee surgeries to fix osteoporosis are worthless. As well as lower back surgeries for degenerative disk disease.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a poll from the American Cancer Society. The ACS polled primary care physcians as to whether they would order a mammography screening test for a woman with another terminal illness such as late stage inoperable lung cancer. Surprisingly nearly half of the doctors polled said they would order the test. Doug and Doc also briefly discuss a story about patients charging doctors when the doctors are late for appointments.

Asserting the number one killer is now medical doctors through mistakes in surgery, medications and infections. Also outlining why some cultures in other countries live much longer than Americans.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding gluten intolerance. Explaining the difference between gluten intolerance and food allergies. The author of the article points out that although the gluten free products such as pastas and baked goods are healthier than products made from refined flours. These gluten free products however are often loaded with sugar and fats making them high in calories.
