Monologue

Dr. Wallach start the show discussing a report that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association a few years ago. The report stated that over 15 million Americans are killed, injured or infected in hospital or medical settings every year. Doc contends that if this occurred in any other industry people would avoid them like the plague.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach continue discussing a news article on medical mistakes. An Institute of Medicine report that came out in 1999 that stated at least 98,000 Americans die because of medical mistakes every year. The article contends that since law regarding medical mistake reporting vary between states no true numbers are currently available. So they now contend the number is around 200,000. However Doc and Doug believe that number could be higher. The article also states that since 1996 the percentage of doctors office visits that resulted in at least five prescriptions has almost tripled. While in the same time span the number of MRI scans has quadrupled.
