A newly released report by the public policy institute of California, finds that the central coast is home to the highest number of illegal immigrants in the state. When combining the populations of Monterey and san benito counties, the report revealed that about 1 out of every 7 residents is an undocumented immigrant. That is about 13- and a half percent of the population of those counties. Santa cruz also had a higher-than average number, at 8.2-percent. Statewide, about 7-percent of residents did not immigrate legally. Of those, about 60-percent are from mexico.
