Although all businesses on Highway 1 between Carmel and Cambria are open, due to the Mud Creek Slide, Highway 1 remains closed between just south of Gorda, to just north of Salmon Creek. Cal-Trans still hopes to be able to reopen that section of the coast highway by late this summer. The Mud Creek Slide involved more than 5 million cubic yards of mud, dirt, rocks and debris. Along with obliterating that section of Highway 1, it changed the shape of the coastline in that area.
