A section of Highway 1 that was shut down by a massive mudslide at Alder Creek is now open to motorists for 12 hours a day. State transportation officials said Friday the mudslide caused by heavy rain Sunday on Highway 1 at Alder Creek has been cleared enough to allow two-way traffic from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will stay closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The highway remains closed in both directions about 50 miles north of Big Sur at Rocky Creek, where a half-mile section of the freeway collapsed during a storm two weeks ago. Pedestrians and bicyclists are being escorted across the slide area at 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. In Humboldt County, Highway 101 near Garberville is closed in both directions because of a massive slide there Wednesday.
