A MAN, WHO WAS THE PRESIDENT OF A LOCAL BUILDING MATERIALS BUSINESS FOR NEARLY 5 DECADES, HAS PASSED AWAY. HOMER HAYWARD TOOK OVER THE FAMILY BUSINESS (HAYWARD LUMBER) WHEN HE WAS JUST 24 YEARS-OLD, AND HELPED TURN IT INTO THE 6-STORE, 68-MILLION-DOLLAR-A-YEAR BUSINESS IT IS TODAY. HAYWARD PASSED AWAY FRIDAY AT HIS CARMEL HOME, AFTER A BRIEF BATTLE WITH A BRAIN TUMOR. HIS FUNERAL SERVICE IS SLATED TO BEGIN AT 3 P.M. SATURDAY, AT CYPRESS COMMUNITY CHURCH ON THE MONTEREY-SALINAS HIGHWAY.
