Should we limit the world population?

This Saturday August 23rd 8-9 PM on It’s A Question Of Balance with Ruth Copland we consider ‘Should we limit the world population?’ According to renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough humans are threatening their own existence and that of other species by using up the world’s resources. He says “We are plague on the Earth. It’s not just climate change, it’s sheer space and places to grow food for this enormous horde. Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us”. What do you think? If we accept that population explosion is a problem, how should we address it when there are so many sensitive issues around it, such as religion and the rights of the individual? When the growing burden of humanity on the Earth is such a real problem, why is it hardly ever discussed openly by politicians? Is it because we have too much invested in short term economic expansion to consider the effects of our ever-growing world population on our long-term fate as a species? What do you think? John Babcock Special Guest on It’s A Question Of balance with Ruth Copland Saturday August 23rd 9-10 PM

This week I’m pleased to be interviewing John Babcock, Santa Cruz Artist of the Year 2014. His medium is paper, and his work has been shown in over thirty major museums in Europe, the United States and Japan. He has lectured and conducted workshops throughout the United States and in India. His work is included in many public and private collections including The Museum of Art and Design, New York. He uses paper of his own manufacture to build art works of poured, cast, inlaid, and collaged paper. John’s art reflects a unique exploration of color relationships to evoke an emotional response. About his work he states, “I gravitate to earth forms for inspiration, because perhaps, much of the colors that I use are earth-derived pigments. I have drawn upon images that come to me when I contemplate the pulsating or vibrating nature of waves, windblown sand, or Japanese rock gardens. I seek to capture the essence of these experiences and document them through the peculiarities of colored paper.” Don’t miss this unique chance to encounter the life and work of a remarkable artist! Good Morning Monterey Bay August 18, 2014

Today's Highlights of Good Morning Monterey Bay, August 18, 2014:

Today on the program we had City of Santa Cruz Water Advisory Board Members Charlie Keutmann of the Garden Company of Cabrillo Economics Professor Sue Holt discussing how they are conduit between the community at large and the water department for the City of Santa Cruz.

We also had Assemblyman Mark Stone speak to Rosemary about his legislative agenda:

· AB 2416 - Wage Theft Recovery Act: Allows employees to place wage liens on an employer’s property for unpaid wages. It is sadly common for employees in some types of jobs not to receive the wages they have earned, even after the Labor Commissioner has granted them with a judgment in their favor.

· AB 1579 - Healthy Babies Act: Makes pregnant women eligible for CalWORKs public benefits in the 2nd pregnancy trimester, rather than 3rd trimester, as is current law.

· AB 2308 – ID cards for released inmates: Expands an existing program that provides California ID cards to people released from prison so that they can more successfully reintegrate into the community. An ID card makes it easier to get a job and find housing.

· AB 1614 – EBT Protection and Empowerment Act: Requires that the state’s next contract with EBT system vendor includes a requirement that EBT recipients are informed about where they can find “in network” ATMs where they aren’t charged a fee for withdrawing cash. The bill also requires individuals to be informed that if they get public benefits through direct deposit, they can better avoid ATM charges of up to $4 per transaction when they use their bank debit card.

Rosie spoke to Mandy Hart of the SPCA about giving Addie a new home:
