WORK ON HIGHWAY 1 IN BIG SUR BEGAN YESTERDAY. A PROJECT TO CONSTRUCT A PERMANENT VIADUCT ABOUT 15 MILES SOUTH OF CARMEL NEAR ROCKY CREEK BRIDGE IS NOW UNDERWAY. CALTRANS SAID ROADWORK IS TO TAKE PLACE SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, WITH PROJECT COMPLETION SLATED FOR AUGUST 2013.
THE PROJECT RESULTED FROM A ROADWAY SPLIPOUT THAT CAUSED SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE SOUTHBOUND LANE AND REQUIRED HWY. 1 TO BE CLOSED FROM NORTH OF BIG SUR AND SOUTH OF CARMEL AT ROCKY CREEK LAST SPRING
