It took less than 90 days for Cal-Trans to clean-up, repair and re-open Highway 1 south of Big Sur. That after late January storms led to a Debris Flow (from the Dolan Fire) that caused a 150 crevasse in the coastal highway at the mouth of Rat Creek. That’s about 15 miles south of the town of Big Sur.
Although the road has re-opened to through traffic (way ahead of schedule, because of virtually no rain to slow down the construction) work is expected to continue on this section for the next couple months.
Some Cal-Trans workers worked up 14 hours a day, 7 days a week to get the Highway re-opened so quickly .
All told Cal-Trans workers removed 70-thousand cubic yards of debris, to be able to do this rebuild.
