ABOUT 15 HUNDRED PEOPLE ARE SAID TO HAVE TURNED OUT FOR TODAY’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOCAL ORGANIZATION GREY BEARS. THE EVENT WAS CELEBRATED WITH THEIR ANNUAL HARVEST PICNIC, WHICH WAS HELD THIS AFTERNOON IN HARVEST WEST PARK IN SANTA CRUZ. ALONG WITH HOSTING THIS AND OTHER COMMUNITY EVENTS, GREY BEARS DISTRIBUTES GROCERIES TO ITS MORE THAN 4 THOUSAND MEMBERS (OVER THE AGE OF 55). GREY BEARS ALSO RUNS RECYCLING, AND COMPOSTING CENTERS FOR EVERYONE, AS WELL AS A THRIFT STORE, AND A COMPUTER ELECTRONICS STORE.
GREY BEARS, WHICH HAS DISTRIBUTED 78 MILLION POUNDS OF FRESH PRODUCE AND GROCERIES TO ITS MEMBERS SINCE 1973, DIVERTS ABOUT 18 THOUSAND TONS OF WASTE FROM LOCAL LANDFILLS EVERY YEAR.
