After two years, the city of Greenfield announced this week they’re close to hiring a new permanent police chief. The announcement comes after the city was without a full-time police chief since Joe Grebmeier was placed on administrative leave, and then retired nearly two years ago. Grebmeier’s resignation was followed by the arrival of Soledad Police Chief Eric Sills as Soledad and Greenfield merged their police departments. The merger was forced to end last year by Greenfield City Manager Susan Stanton. Officials say the open position is being applied for by dozens of candidates from as far away as New York.
