DUE TO A NEW APP, PEOPLE WITH CERTAIN SMARTPHONES WILL BE ABLE TO TRACK SOME GREAT WHITE SHARKS OFF THE COAST OF CALIFORNIA. A TEAM, AT STANFORD’S HOPKINS MARINE STATION IN PACIFIC GROVE, CREATED THE APPLICATION, KNOWN AS “SHARK NET”. THE “APP” USES A SMALL NETWORK OF SATELLITE-ENABLED BUOYS, THAT LISTEN TO TAGGED GREAT WHITE SHARKS FROM SOUTHERN BIG SUR DOWN TO THE FARALLON ISLANDS. CURRENTLY THERE ARE ONLY 5 OF THE SPECIAL BUOYS DEPLOYED, HOWEVER THERE ARE PLANS TO SET MORE OF THEM UP ALONG THE CALIFORNIA COAST. “SHARK NET” IS CURRENTLY ONLY AVAILABLE ON APPLE PRODUCTS.
