The City of Monterey will consider spending $20,000 for a building assessment of the Golden State Theatre. The historic Alvarado Street Theater is up for sale and Council women Nancy Selfridge and Libby Downey want the city to preserve it by purchasing it. The two say the theatre is necessary in revitalizing Monterey’s downtown area, and also say they have an overwhelming response from the community supporting the purchase. Council members will be presented with a proposal when they meet tonight that would assess the 87-year old theatre.
