This weekend brought a blue glow in the ocean overnight along the Central Coast.
Rachael Kippen, Executive Director of O’Neill Sea Odyssey, explains how this happens:
“One type of plankton in the bay called dinoflagellates, which are plant plankton, and those are creating the bioluminescence firework display”, Kippen said.
“It can both be a good and potentially not so good situation. Bioluminescence is often connected to red tide”.
Kippen went on to say that the plankton radiate this color as a way to deter predators.
