A NEARLY 6-HOUR STANDOFF ENDED YESTERDAY IN GILROY AFTER A MAN WAS ARRESTED ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CHARGES. POLICE SAY THE INCIDENT BEGAN AT 11:30 NEAR GILROY HIGH SCHOOL, WHEN THEY RESPONDED TO A REPORT OF SPOUSAL ABUSE. POLICE ALONG WITH A SWAT TEAM, SURROUNDED THE AREA UNTIL 5 P.M., ENDING THE STAND-OFF BY THROWING TEAR GAS INTO THE HOME. THE SUSPECT, RICHARD CASTENEDA SURRENDERED AND WAS ARRESTED ON A PREVIOUS WARRANT FOR SPOUSAL ABUSE AND PROBATION VIOLATION. POLICE SAY AT LEAST TWO OTHER WOMEN AND ONE CHILD WERE INSIDE THE HOME DURING THE STANDOFF.
