The deadline for the closure of the gateway plaza homeless encampment near downtown Santa Cruz has come and gone and the tents remain.
City officials say they will try and get a better head count of how many people are living at the so called “Ross camp.”
They’re also working with fire chief to establish fire prevention at the camp. City council members are forming a special committee to address the problem and the deadline to serve on the committee is april 29.
Meanwhile… the city is forced to keep the camp open until they can provide enough shelter for everyone living there.
