15 people were left homeless early this morning after a fire that started in a converted shed near Oldtown Salinas, spread to 3 other homes. Firefighters responded to the 200 block of East San Luis Street around 7:45 a.m. to find fire coming from the detached shed. Authorities say the fire then jumped to a small house on the property and to two bungalow style houses next door. Officials say the shed was illegally converted into housing and believe the fire began there. All four structures were deemed uninhabitable, and damages have been estimated at $475,000. No injuries were reported. The fire was controlled in an hour.
