A prescribed burn got underway this morning in Monterey County at the Former Fort Ord near Seaside. The burn, which ignited at 10:20 a.m., lasted for four hours as 327-acres were charred. Smoke was reportedly still visible by 2:40 on all sides of the Monterey Bay, and as far away as Capitola. Officials say the prescribed burn allows vegetation to be cleared so that workers are able to safely remove unexploded munitions and explosives left over from when Fort Ord was an Army training center. Military officials are deciding whether to continue the burn tomorrow.
