THIS AFTERNOON FIREFIGHTERS FOUGHT A BLAZE THAT BEGAN AS A GRASS FIRE AND SPREAD TO THE BACK WALL OF AN OLD SINGLE STORY BUILDING. THE KEARNEY STREET BUILDING IS A ST ORAGE AREA CONTAINING HUNDREDS OF PALLETS OF BOTTLES OF MARTINELLI’S SPARKLING CIDER…AND OTHER MARKET-READY BEVERAGES. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED IN CONNECTION WITH THIS FIRE, AND A WAREHOUSE WORKER SAID THAT ALTHOUGH THERE WAS SOME SMOKE IN THE BUILDING, THERE DID NOT APPEAR TO BE ANY DAMAGE. THE CAUSE OF THIS BLAZE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.
IT APPEARS THAT THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS FIRE, AND LAST YEAR’S 3-DAY FIRE THAT GUTTED MOST OF THE NEARBY HISTORIC APPLE GROWERS ICE AND COLD STORAGE BUILDING ON WEST BEACH STREET IN WATSONVILLE.
