Calling PG&E murderers, liars, and forgers, the families of some of the 85 people killed by the 2018 Camp Fire told of how the blaze sparked by faulty PG&E equipment impacted their lives.
Speakers assailed the utility company, describing family events that will never occur after loved ones died in the fire. PG&E pleaded guilty Tuesday to 84 counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of unlawfully starting the fire in and around the town of Paradise.
As a corporation, PG&E can’t go to jail for killing the victims. It will instead pay a maximum fine of $4 million. The company will also pay $13.5 billion to compensate survivors of the Camp Fire and other fires blamed on the company in 2017 and 2018. Those payments are part of $25.5 billion in settlements reached in the PG&E bankruptcy case.
