(07:42) CALIFORNIA – A series of earthquakes that struck California in 2005 was caused by oil drilling operations, according to a new report. The study, published Thursday in the journal American Geophysical Union, links the injection of wastewater from gas operations to an increase in seismic activity in Kern County. The resulting earthquakes reached magnitudes as high as 4.6. The study was conducted by researchers from UC Santa Cruz, the University of Southern California and two French universities. They plan to continue studying the impact of oil operations on seismic activity in other areas of California. (S.G.)
