One man died in what appears to have been a solo-vehicle crash in Big Sur either Friday night or Saturday morning. Although a call came in about the accident around 9 a-m Saturday morning, the vehicle is believed to have been there for a number of hours when it was spotted. A C.H.P. Officer said that the driver appeared to have been heading northbound (in heavy fog) when his white 2012 Chevy Cruze failed to negotiate a right turn (that came after a long straightaway). The vehicle then went across the southbound lane, and over the 280-foot cliff.
The fatal accident occurred about a quarter-mile south of Willow Creek Road, about 6 miles south of where an Oregon woman and her jeep went over a similar cliff a couple weeks ago. She survived that accident.
