a salinas native was among the 6-marines killed in a helicopter crash on January 19th, in afghanistan. according to the Tacoma News Tribune, Captain Daniel b. bartle was born in salinas, and lived there until age 7. captain bartle lived in Ferndale, Washington; he was deployed with the marine heavy helicopter squadron 363, marine aircraft group 24, 1st marine aircraft wing, 3rd marine expeditionary force, out of kaneohe bay, Hawaii. Captain bartle and 5 other marines were killed when their CH-53D sea Stallion heavy lift helicopter crashed in helmund province, Afghanistan. Captain bartle is set to be buried in Washington state on Monday. He was 27 years old.
