Caltrans is requesting approval from the California Transportation Commission next month for expanding Highway 156 in San Benito County. That after certification of right of way was granted, the construction phase is expected to begin next summer and take at least two years.
The plan for expansion includes four new lanes between The Alameda in San Juan Bautista and Hollister and comes with a price tag of approximately $105 million.
This expansion covers five miles of the highway, and anticipate a reduction in collisions, vehicle operating costs, and congestion.
Funding for this project will originate from local traffic impact fees and the statewide transportation and improvement program.
