TWO EVENTS ARE PLANNED TO MARK THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATHS OF SANTA CRUZ DETECTIVES SERGEANT BUTCH BAKER AND ELIZABETH BUTLER WHO WERE KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY ON FEBRUARY 26TH 2013. MAYOR LYNN ROBINSON WILL LEAD A PUBLIC GATHERING AT CITY HALL TOMORROW (TUES) FROM 6 P-M TO 7 P-M WHICH WILL INCLUDE SINGING, AND A MEMORIAL BOOK PEOPLE CAN SIGN. ON WEDNESDAY, A PERMANENT MEMORIAL GARDEN AT THE SANTA CRUZ POLICE STATION WILL BE UNVEILED. THE GARDEN INCLUDES A FOUNTAIN, JASPER BOULDERS, AND BRASS PLAQUES AND WAS BUILT ON THE SPOT OF LAST YEAR’S SPONTANEOUS SHRINE CREATED BY MOURNERS IMMEDIATELY AFTER NEWS OF THE SHOOTINGS. DETECTIVES BAKER AND BUTLER WERE THE FIRST SANTA CRUZ CITY POLICE OFFICERS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AND OF THE 10 OFFICERS KILLED IN CALIFORNIA LAST YEAR DETECTIVE ELIZABETH BUTLER WAS THE ONLY FEMALE.
