A jury today (Wednesday) convicted the man accused in the 2014 shooting deaths of a 33-year-old man and a 4-year-old girl at a Watsonville restaurant.
Michael Escobar was found guilty of 1st-degree murder in the deaths of 4-year-old Jaelyn Maria Zavala and 33-year-old gang member Ramon Rendon.
Jaelyn lay wounded inside the Fish House restaurant while another victim, a 26-year-old Watsonville man, was nearby suffering from a gunshot wound. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Outside on the ground next to the adjacent Valley Inn motel, 33-year-old Ramon Rendon, also of Watsonville, lay dead. Jaelyn later died soon at a hospital.
Escobar and another man were arrested after they attempted to flee the shooting scene.
Escobar is scheduled to be sentenced on February 20th.
