A clean-energy bill has advanced out of committee in the State Senate, which would require utilities to get a third of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020. California’s current energy target requires utilities to obtain 20-percent of their electricity from renewable sources by the end of 2010. Senate Bill-7-2-2, authored by state senator Joe Simitian, increases the number to 33-percent, and extends the date another decade. The number is consistent with executive orders given by Governor Schwarzenegger, however Senator Simitian said in a statement that it is important to make the number official, by setting it into law. The full senate is now set to consider the bill.
