A CONTROLLED BURN, THAT WAS STARTED EARLY YESTERDAY, WENT OUT OF CONTROL JUST BEFORE 5 P-M LAST NIGHT IN THE HILLS 8 MILES SOUTHEAST OF SALINAS. AS OF LATE LAST NIGHT ROUGHLY 400 ACRES (NEAR ENCINAL ROAD) ARE THOUGHT TO HAVE BURNED. HAND CREWS (THAT HAD HOPED TO SPEND THE NIGHT CUTTING A LINE AROUND THE BLAZE) HAD TO BE GROUNDED (FOR THE NIGHT) BECAUSE OF THE RUGGEDNESS OF THE TERRAIN.
