A CONTROLLED BURN, THAT WAS STARTED EARLY YESTERDAY, WENT OUT OF CONTROL AROUND 6 P-M LAST NIGHT IN THE HILLS 8 MILES SOUTHEAST OF SALINAS. AS OF LATE LAST NIGHT ROUGHLY 300 ACRES (NEAR ENCINAL ROAD) ARE THOUGHT TO HAVE BURNED SO FAR. HAND CREWS THAT HAD HOPED TO SPEND THE NIGHT CUTTING A LINE AROUND THE BLAZE HAD TO BE GROUNDED (FOR THE NIGHT) BECAUSE OF THE RUGGEDNESS OF THE TERRAIN.
