GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN HAS SIGNED SB-135 INTO LAW. IT DIRECTS THE OFFICE OF EMERGENCY SERVICES TO DEVELOP A STATEWIDE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM FOR EARTHQUAKES….AS WELL AS IDENTIFYING SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR THAT SYSTEM. ALTHOUGH THE SYSTEMS THAT ARE ALREADY IN PLACE (IN JAPAN AND MEXICO) CANNOT PREDICT EARTHQUAKES, THEY CAN DETECT THE FIRST FAST-MOVING SHOCK WAVE, AND ALERT PEOPLE (BEFORE THE SLOWER, BUT MORE DAMAGING WAVES SPREAD)….WHICH COULD GIVE TIME FOR: UTILITIES TO SHUT OF GAS LINES, TRAINS TO BE STOPPED, AND CARS TO PULL OFF ROADWAYS.
