Monterey County will be cracking down on DUIs beginning Friday for a period of 18 days that they call Avoid the 18. A checkpoint will be set up in Salinas, extra DUI patrols will be conducted in Carmel and Soledad, and local CHP will saturate the freeways in an effort to cut down on instances of driving under the influence. The Salinas Police Department says that they saw a 25% reduction in DUI’s last year from the year before, and they would like to see that number continue to drop. The increased enforcement begins this Friday, the 17th, and ends September 3rd.
