The Santa Cruz Downtown Commission voted yesterday to recommend a pilot program that would allow businesses to branch out into parking spaces. The ‘parklet’ program would enable approved businesses off Pacific Avenue to convert up to two parking spaces into café extensions. Early applicants include Hula’s Island Grill, Lúpulo, and the Penny Ice Creamery. The one-year program would cost the city an estimated $12,500 in lost parking meter revenue. The City Council will consider the proposal on May 13th.
