The Santa Cruz County deputy who fatally shot fifteen-year-old Aptos High School student Luke Smith last November will not face criminal charges. Smith was shot while high on LSD (after he had stabbed his father and uncle, and refused to drop his knife when deputies ordered him to). Video footage of the popular student being shot stirred controversy about whether deputies had used unnecessary force, however it was determined that because of the circumstances, the deputy involved did not overstep the department’s procedure.
