The story of the Bear Fire is complex, and the Santa Cruz Sentinel describes it as depraved. Here is a very short summary taken from the paper, which has too many details to be explained here.
According to the paper, even a Norteño gang member thought Marlon Coy’s actions were too depraved to tolerate.
The direct witness — a hired South County gang member — watched Marlon Coy behaving erratically, slapping a rattlesnake in his car, yelling and threatening to shoot motorists, slashing another car’s tires and ordering his contracted Norteño guard to attack and rape a woman walking near Bear Creek Canyon Road on Oct.16, 2017. The gang member admitted Tuesday he was fearful for testifying in the case.
The convoluted narrative even had Coy’s defense attorney Mitchell Page confused about what transpired almost three years ago on the night Coy is accused of igniting the 391-acre Bear Fire at his girlfriend’s junk-laden compound at 475 Diane’s Way.
