Work crews suspended their work to demolish the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge this afternoon. That after the wrecking ball was not able to break apart the failing bridge, as expected. Although the goal was to break the bridge into 3 pieces, letting the bridge collapse into the forested canyon below…..it’s unclear what tomorrow’s approach will be, when workers resume there. In the meantime, a variety of agencies and volunteers are cutting a switchback-styled hiking trail is being carved in the steep canyon. Once completed, it would allow locals to cross the canyon on foot. Highway 1 remains closed between Ragged Point and just south of Palo Colorado Road). It is scheduled to reopen to locals and the public on Thursday, from just north of Big Sur Station to Carmel.
