REPRESENTATIVES FROM DEEPWATER DESAL BROUGHT THEIR IDEA TO THE SOQUEL CREEK WATER DISTRICT’S BOARD LAST NIGHT. THEY SAY THAT PULLING THE WATER FROM 100-FEET DOWN IN A DEEPWATER CANYON IN THE MONTEREY BAY WOULD BE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLIER THAN CREATING SMALLER DESAL PLANTS THAT USE SURFACE WATER. THE DEEPWATER PLANT WOULD BE 10 TIMES BIGGER THAN THE PROPOSED PLANT IN SANTA CRUZ (THAT HAS GARNERED SUCH COMMUNITY OPPOSITION THAT IT HAS BEEN SIDELINED). DEEPWATER’S PLANT WOULD WARM THE 100-FOOT-DEEP WATER BY SENDING IT THROUGH A NEW REGIONAL DATA CENTER (TO COOL THE EQUIPMENT THERE), BEFORE STRIPPING THE SALT OUT OF IT.
