(10:45) Santa Cruz – A man has been arrested in connection with the false imprisonment and kidnapping of a UCSC student. A woman reported yesterday that she accepted a ride from a man around the Kresge College area shortly before 1 a.m. When the driver reached the hitchhikers destination he ignored her requests to stop. The woman was able to escape when the vehicle slowed for a turn; she opened the door and jumped from the moving vehicle. Investigators and the UC Santa Cruz Police Department identified 28-year-old Jose Ortiz as the suspect based off leads that were generated during the initial investigation. Ortiz was detained yesterday in Watsonville for a probation compliance check after a traffic stop. He was arrested and booked in to the Santa Cruz County Jail.
