With 737 death row prisoners in California, it’s no surprise that some of them come from the central coast. The 5 from this area are: Kristin William Hughes (for the 1989 rape and murder of a pacific grove woman); Kenneth Bivert (a prison gang leader serving a life sentence in salinas valley state prison for killing 3 people who were fishing along a Sacramento riverbank when Bivert was 17, as well as stabbing to death an inmate who refused his orders to attack another inmate back in 1997); Ronald Moore (for the murder of an 11 year-old neighbor); Joseph Manibusan (for killing 2 and severely wounding a 3rd during 2 1998 street robberies); David Carpenter (the trailside killer, who assaulted hikers in Santa Cruz and Marin Counties in 1980 and ‘81….raping some and shooting and killing 7).
