Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach has been appearing recently with George Noory on Coast to Coast AM.

So doctors have been instructing patients to stop taking them prior to surgery. The study of over 1500 heart surgery patients found that in fact the opposite is true. Patients tended to bleed less during surgery and fewer bags of blood were need for transfusions.

Stating that even if your grandmother lived to be over 100 it doesn't necessarily mean you will too. Contending living a long life takes a lot of work. Researchers found that women who supplement with fish oil during their third trimester had a reduced risk of having a child with asthma. It was a double blind study of over 700 pregnant women. One group got fish oil supplements and another group got a placebo of olive oil. Those getting the fish oil wree 30% less likely to give birth to a child with asthma.

Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show discussing SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Personally taking credit for the eradication of SIDS. Contending that SIDS is due to nutritional deficiencies. Stating that beginning in 1978 he was telling the FDA and companies that make infant formulas to add nutrients to their formulas. Eventually they did add these nutrients and now SIDS rarely occurs.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article about a Chinese study on mushroom consumption. The study followed more than 600 Chinese seniors age 60 and older for six years. Finding that those who consumed two standard portions a week may have a 50% reduced risk of having mild cognitive impairment (MCI). With a standard portion being about a half a plate.
