Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach has been appearing recently with George Noory on Coast to Coast AM.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Joel Wallach beginning the show discussing the importance of good fats. Stating that fatty acids are essential for optimal health. Contending people should get their fats from foods like fish and avocados. But should stay away from fats from fried foods.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news article the FDA updating it's guidelines for sunscreens. Citing two ingredients often in sunscreens PABA and trolamine salicylate are not considered to be "generally recognized as safe and effective" (GRASE). Two other ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are GRASE. Twelve other ingredients found in sunscreens didn't have enough data to determine if the are GRASE. The FDA is asking the manufacturors to provide more information so they can be evaluated.

Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show discussing plaque in the arteries. Citing the Ansel Keyes story of him going around the country demonizing butter and fats. All in an effort sell Crisco for Procter and Gamble. Stating that plaque is not caused by cholesterol but is caused by inflammation. Inflammation is caused by eating the bad foods oils, fried foods and burnt meats.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a Harvard study. Researchers studied the dietary habits of over 16,000 men and women who were type 2 diabetics. Finding those who consumed five one ounce servings of nuts a week had a reduced risk of heart disease by 17% compared to those not eating nuts. Eating just one handful of nuts reduced the risk of heart disease by 3% and lowering the risk dying by 6%.

As the disks flatten various nerves get pinched leading to a number of health challenges. Which can be reversed through nutritional supplementaton.

Analyzing FDA documents researchers found that the prescription drug fentanyl is being over prescribed. In fact the study found that up to 50% of prescriptions have been wrongly prescribed. The drug is meant for people with advanced cancer who have been on an opioid treatment.

He then cites the statistic that medical mistakes are the third leading cause of death. Stating that in 2004 the government put out a report that stated the children of today won't out live their parents.

Researchers demonstrating that the flavonoid apigenin can improve the formation of neurons and strengthened the connections between brain cells. When apigenin was applied to human stem cells in a lab neurons formed in less than a month and formed stronger and more sophisticated communications between one another.
