Outlining a specific California doctor who since 2009 has gotten $224,000 from five major drug companies for speaking, consulting, travel and meals. In the same time frame hundreds of other California doctors received over $241 million. While nationwide doctors got $2 billion from 15 companies.

Dr. Peter Glidden fills in for Dr. Wallach discussing the news of actress Valery Harper's terminal cancer diagnosis. Asserting that the war on cancer is lost after trillions have been spent on treatments and research. Contending the healthcare system is a broken model treating only symptoms and not address the root of the problem.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Glidden discuss a news article regarding a study of statin drugs. The study from the University of Michigan found that of primary care physicians and cardiologists surveyed 70% admitted they would prescribe statins to patients who don't have heart disease. Over 750 randomly selected doctors nationwide were given a survey with six different "hypothetical" patients with varying ages and genders. One third of the doctors responded to the survey between 40% to 94% would prescribe statins to patients who had no history of heart disease.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a new FDA warning. This latest warning concerns the popular antibiotic athromycin sold as Zithromax. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine compared the risk of cardiovascular death different antibacterial drugs and found Zithromax had a higher rate of death. Drugs in this class have the potential to cause QT prolongation which is an abnormal hearth rthyhm or arrhythmias that could lead to death.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a news article on heart disease in mummies. Researchers scanned 137 mummies spanning four geographical areas and 4000 years. Finding that 34% had evidence of atherosclerosis while those over the age of 40 at death nearly half had vascular calcification. Leading researchers to believe that quite possibly heart disease isn't caused by a diet of Big Macs. But rather simply the result of the natural aging process. Doc disagrees asserting heart disease is the result of nutritional deficiencies.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article on breast cancer. The story outlines the plight of Judy Valencia who diligently got mammograms routinely. One showed an abnormality so a biopsy was performed resulting in a cancer diagnosis. She underwent a double mastectomy only to later discover she never had cancer at all. A top cancer expert interviewed for the article stated that women should always get a second opinion before doing any treatments.

Dr. Wallach starts the show detalining a story about a recent interaction with an anthesthesiologist. Aside from being extremely arrogant Doc contends the other doctor stated that animal studies can't be translated to humans. Dr. Wallach asserts that if that were true why are virtually all pharmaceutical drugs first tested on animals before humans.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a study on heart health. The study found that women who ate baked or broiled fish at least five servings a week had a 30% reduced risk of heart failure. The study also found that women who ate at least one serving of fried fish weekly increased their risk of heart failure by 48%. The researchers also determined that darker more oily fish such as salmon or mackerel got more protection than those eating lighter fish like tuna, sole or cod.
