Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach has been appearing recently with George Noory on Coast to Coast AM.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a study that indicated glucosamine and chondroitin don't work in helping rebuild joints.  Doc points out that these nutrients need other nutrients as co-factors to be used by the human body.  Contending that there are 90 essential nutrients for proper health.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a study that found in 1 and 8 surgeries there are discrepancies in "rountine count" of sponges and instruments.  The researchers also contend that items are actually left in patients in one in every 5000 surgeries.  Asserting that surgeons and operating staff should take these counts very seriously.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss an opinion editorial written by a medical doctors.  The article contends that many of the "screening test" offered by doctors do very little good to prevent heatlh problems.  Specifically outlining the problems with cholesterol, prostate and colon testing.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussning all of the jobs leaving the U.S.  Asserting that most of this is due to the high cost of healthcare.  Contending that 10 years ago the U.S. ranked 17th among industrialized nations in health and longevity.  Now the U.S. ranks 47th in health and longivety despite spending more on healthcare than all of the other 46 countries combined.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a man in Texas that died of a heart attack while waiting for over 19 hours in an emergency waiting room.  Since 1996 the percentage of ER visits has risen by  32% while the number of ER's has declined by 7%.  According to the CDC the average wait time in an ER is 3.3 hours with some waiting as long as 24 hours.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a Swedish study linking fish consumption and the prevention of eczema.  The study following 17,000 babies long term found that infants who consumed at least one serving of fish before nine months had a 25% reduced risk of developing eczema.
