Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach has been appearing recently with George Noory on Coast to Coast AM.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing recent layoffs by AMEX (American Express).  Contending that for those who have been laid off or are experiencing difficult economic times now is a good time start a home based business through Youngevity.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a report from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) on the rates of diabetes in the U.S.  The report states that in the past decade rates of diabetes mostly type II have nearly doubled.  The area showing the biggest increases is the southern parts of the country.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a merger between Delta and Northwest airlines where several job cuts are expected.  Also relating that American Express is set to lay off 1500 people and cut back on healthcare benefits.  Doc contends that this is an excellent time to start a home-based business for supplemental income.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss the finding of a survey of doctors by the National Institute of Health.  The survey found that 62% of doctors routinely give patients placebos that they know will have no effect.  Most of those giving these placebos also do not inform the patient but still feel they are ethically correct.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a news article on a government study that was halted.  The National Cancer Institute study was looking into the effects of vitamin E and the trace mineral selenium and the prevention of prostate cancer.  Dr. Wallach questions the efficacy of the study asking "what type of selenium was given and how much".  Citing several previous studies that have found benefits with both selenium and vitamin E.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story regarding two studies published on an increase in spending on type II diabetes care.  In 2001 spending on diabetes drugs was 6.7 billion and now in 2007 spending increased to 12.5 billion.  Expert say that this is due in part to an increased number of patients.  But the big reason is more and more doctors are prescribing newer more expensive drugs.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a British research project on cancer prevention.  The study centered on genetically modified tomatoes that were designed to produce large amounts of the antioxidant anthocyanins.  This antioxidant has been shown to lower the risk of cancer, heart disease and some neurological diseases.
