Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Dr. Wallach has been appearing recently with George Noory on Coast to Coast AM.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing longevity and heath. Citing the numbers of medical mistakes that occur every year in the U.S. Conteing that 180,000 Medicare patients are killed every year.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning unnecessary tests, procedures and other treatments. Several medical societies have gotten together and compiled a list of these that they believe are performed too often unnecessarily. This is all part of a campaign called "Choosing Wisely" organized by the American Board of Internal Medicine's foundation. There aim is to educate patients to question the necessity of these tests and treatments in an effort to get doctors to stop performing useless procedures.

Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show today discussing cancer. Contending that a study in the early 1900s found that taking selenium supplements reduces the risk of all cancers. Also citing several pre-screening tests don't prevent diseases or deaths. Stating that doctors only do them to pad their wallets using the patient as an ATM.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study of SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) prescriptions. The study found 69% of the people prescribed these drugs do not display the classic symptoms of major depressive disorder. SSRIs often prescribed for several other disorders the researchers found that 38% do not meet the criteria for those conditions either. The article also stated that it is known the younger taking these drugs often exhibit suicidal behavior.

Citing all of the statistics such as the U.S. ranks 41st in live births and first year survivability. Also stating all of the statistics of how many patients are injured, infected or killed within the medical system.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article about a patient killed in a hospital. The man had suffered a heart attack and when his wife arrived she was told he didn't survive. When she went to view his body she realized he was still alive. The doctor argued with her and refused to double check the man. Finally nearly three hours later the doctor did check the man's pulse and realized he was still alive. However, the man had suffered a punctured lung during CPR and did ultimately die at anouther hospital. The staff there telling the wife he probably could have survived had he been treated earlier.
