Monologue

Dr. Wallach discusses a news article regarding the deaths two nobel prize winning lauriets.  Asserting that even as intelligent as they were they didn't live to be 100.  One dying in his eighties and the other in his early nineties.  Doc goes on to outline that billionares, athletes and doctors don't live to be 100.  Contending that wealth, intellect nor fitness help people live to be 100.  But simple good nutrition can extend life as has been accomplished in animals.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent research study regarding the cost of extended life.  Researchers at Harvard University and the University of Michigan found that the average cost of one year of extended life is $19,900.  Doug asserts that for nearly $20,000 people could buy a lot of "Pig Packs".  The study also found that by the 1990's 65 year olds paid about $145,000 for each year of extended life.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show discussing the importance of proper thyroid function.  Explaining the effects of the thyroid on the body's endocrin system.  Asserting that as people get over the age of 60 many start to have low thyroid function.

Doug Winfrey and Ben discuss a recent news story concerning hypertension.  A recent NIH study is working to prove that deep breathing can reduce blood pressure.  The theory is that rather than reducing blood pressure through relaxing as a function of deep breathing.  The process allows for better kidney function thus allowing the body to more readily expell toxins and salts.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning "medical tourism".  A new term for a growing industry that involves Americans traveling across the U.S. border and abroad seeking healthcare.  Many because they are among the 45 million without healthcare.  Some because the procedures they are seeking either cost too much in the U.S. or they aren't approved.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent news article concerning the injectable drug "Gestiva".  Adeza Biomedical Corp.  is currently petitioning the FDA to approve the drug to prevent premature babies.  The drug was originally approved in 1956 a therapy to prevent miscarriages.  But the FDA withdrew it's approval in 2000 because the manufacturer stopped selling the drug.  Currently the FDA is saying that one single clinical trial was not  "statistically persuasive" as well as concerns the drug may increase the miscarriage and stillborn rates.
