Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a college athlete who is set to get his third knee operation. Doc asserts that this is not necessary contending the knee can be rebuilt with nutrition. He then tells the story of former NBA star Theo Ratliff who extended his career an additional twelve years after being told his career was over.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a Canadian study on flu vaccines. Researchers found that after analyzing data the 2008-2009 influenza vaccine actually induced the H1N1 flu in people who got the vaccine. Doc asserts this is because once people get the vaccine their immune system is knocked down for up to three months. Contending that if people do want to get the flu vaccine they should get in the spring before flu season begins.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing news articles on recent studies regarding health. The first study found that drinking 2 or more carbonated soft drinks weekly increased risk of pancreatic cancer. The second article urges potential knee surgery patients to seek a second opinion because a growing number of orthopedic surgeons also owning their own rehab facilities. This insures the surgeon can collect multiple fees from each patient.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article on healthcare rationing. Despite what lawmakers are saying regarding healthcare rationing it already exists in the U.S. and has for years. This comes from that fact that doctors are reimbursed different rates depending on the payment method used by the patient. Privately insured patients pay the highest rates, followed by Medicare (primarily used by the elderly) and then Medicaid (used by the poor). Based off these different scales doctors often make Medicaid patients wait or refuse to see them at all.

Citing a news article from a couple of years ago where the authors predicted this epidemic because of aging "baby boomers". Doc contends that there are 72 joints in the body that orthapedic doctors are looking to get rich by replacing. Also asserting there are alternatives to joint replacements.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding the growing problem of "polypharmacy". This is the practice of giving seniors multiple medications often to combat side effects of other medications. The report contends that one-third of Americans ages 57 to 85 are taking five or more prescriptions. It also states that those with chronic conditions are taking 20 or more medications. Doc asserts that this is criminal but no one will go to jail.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing the statistics surrounding medical mistakes that occur in the U.S. each year. According the Journal of the American Medical Association and the CDC (Centers for Disease Prevention and Control) some 15 million Americans are killed, injured and infected every year. Doc states that if this were the airline industry no one would ever fly.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a surgeon who has written a book exposing the "code of silence" within the medical industry. The surgeon from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Dr. Marty Makary's book explains how doctors don't tell anyone about bad doctors or mistakes they witness. Also discussing how greedy doctors and hospitals take sales commissions from drug and medical device makers.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing where the U.S. rates in several health rankings. First citing a recent report on projections regarding American's obesity levels for years to come. The report states that by 2030 half of all Americans in the U.S. will be obese. The U.S. ranks first in the world in obesity. However, the U.S. ranks 60th in health and longevity spending more on healthcare than all of the other 59 countries combined. With the U.S. ranking 41st in the world in first year survivablilty among infants.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach continue discussing the problem of weight gain and obesity in the U.S. Referring to the report on obesity they discuss reader comments as to why or whose fault it is that the U.S. ranks so poorly. While some readers were close such as more excercise and lifestyle changes no one got the whole picture. Not making the connection that weight gain and obesity are not problems of excess but rather a problem of nutritional deficiencies.
