Dr. Joel Wallach

Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two news stories the first concerns the surgeon who was accused of hastening a patient's death in order to harvest organs.  The courts have now dismissed 2 felony charges.  The doctor also wants the third and final charge dropped as well.  Second they discuss a CDC study that found women who are diabetic before becoming pregnant are more likely to have children with birth defects.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a study that found deaths from medication errors at home increased 700%.  These errors are caused mostly from interactions between drugs and other drugs or alcohol.  Of course the medical community is blaming this on the patients.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a government study.  The study found that preventable medical errors resulted in a 10% death rate within 90 days of surgery.  These preventable errors cost employers medical plans 1.5 billion dollars in one year between 2001 and 2002.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben starts the show discussing a couple of key trace minerals and how the help promote good health. Asserting that 70mg of Chromium daily can actually reduce cravings for carbohydrates. Also discussing the importance of enough zinc in the diet for a variety of heatlh issues.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a blog written by a medical doctor concerning hand sanitizers. Apparently the is a growing problem of children swallowing these products and becoming extremely ill. The products are usually about 62% alcohol by weight a single 2 ounce container has as much alcohol as 4 shots of vodka. In 2005 the American Association of Poison Control Centers reported nearly 12,000 cases and 6600 have been reported so far this year.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show discussing the prevalence of inflammed bowel disease in the U.S.   Contending that this disorder is not a drug deficiency, but a nutritional deficiency.  He then outlines a strategy for dealing with this through supplementation.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news article conerning a study on cholesterol lowering statin drugs.  The study found that there was a link between a gene variation and those more prone to muscle pain and weakness associated with statin drugs.  Ben asserts that there is no reason to take statins as cholesterol levels and heart disease have never been directly linked.
