Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a recent medical mistake.  A man having a shunt installed had abdominal pain following the surgery.  More than a month went by and several doctors office visits complaining of the pain the man was told to seek psychiatric help.  A later CT scan revealed the surgeon had left a 10 inch retractor in his body cavity.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent Australian study that found moderate drinking of beer, wine or gin during a meal helped to reduce overall blood sugar levels following the meal. In lean healthy individual postprandial glycemia (post meal blood sugar) by up to 37%.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story regarding the FDA's concerns over Botox.  The agency is looking into reports of deaths and hospitalizations connected to "off-label" uses of Botox and it's competitor Myobloc.  Most likely the outcome could be a black box warning on the products.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing Walmart's recent anouncement that they plan to have health cliniics in at least 500 stores soon.  Ultimately planning to have health clinics in all of it's 5000 plus stores.  Doc contends that trends such as this will eventually lead to the end of primary care and family practice doctors.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story concerning Dr. Robert Jarvik inventor of the first artificial heart.  In the past few years Jarvik has become a spokeman for Pfizer's top selling anti-cholesterol drug Lipitor.  In many ads he is depicted bicycle riding, jogging and rowing a canoe.  Congressional investigators are now saying they believe a body double was used for Jarvik to make him look more athletic.  He also cannot legally prescribe drugs and he is not licensed to pratice medicine.
