Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a Canadian research study that found the practice of giving beta blockers to major sugical patients may do more harm than good.  In fact the study found that people given the drugs before surgery were on third more likely to die within a month after the surgery and had double the risk of stroke.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the fact that politicians often promise free healthcare if they are elected.  Doc asserts that it is not free citing other nations that have socialized healthcare whose tax rates are often as high as 75% to pay for this so called "free" healthcare.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a recent report from prescription benefit provider Medco Health Solutions Inc.  that states 51% of insured Americans are taking at least one prescription medication.  The numbers were worse for seniors over age 65 with 28% of women and 22% of men taking 5 or more medications.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a recent government study.  Researchers were trying to prove that NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammory drugs) could prevent the onset of Alzheimer's.  This government funded study proved that the drugs Aleve and Celebrex had "no benefit".  In fact another study along with this study were halted because of links to increased risk of heart attack and stroke in those taking the drugs.
