Dr. Joel Wallach

A biomedical research pioneer, Dr. Joel D. Wallach spent more than 40 years in the field of Veterinary Medicine, observing and researching the effects of individual nutrients on animal health, before becoming a Naturopathic Physician in 1982. Today, Dr. Wallach is renowned for his groundbreaking research on the health benefits of selenium and other minerals. He currently dedicates his time to lecturing throughout the world on the therapeutic benefits of vitamins and minerals, and on lobbying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a study that found a link between green tea compounds and reduced rates of type I diabetes.  The researchers also discovered that the green tea antioxidant compound EGCG also reduced the symptoms involved with Sjogren's syndrome.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a study that attempts to link autism to rain.  Doc disagrees contending the reason why more autism is diagnosed in areas with higher rainfall is because of the additional "comfort" foods that are consumed in those areas.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a Swedish study on probiotics as antiseptics.  The study found that critically ill patients on ventilators fared just as well if their mouths were swabbed with Lacotobacillus plantarum 299 when compared to those whose mouths were swabbed with the normal chlorhexidine.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story concerning a woman that spent 19 hours in a hospital ER.  Despite the fact the woman never saw a doctor the hospital sent her a bill for $162 because a nurse spent about 5 minutes taking the woman's vital signs.  Hospital administrators saying the the bill wasn't for waiting it was for the care she received.
