Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing diseases that are labeled "autoimmune". Doc asserts that when this term is used it simply means doctors don't know what is causing it. Contending that diseases such as;lupus, Crohn's, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and celiac are all related. Asserting that they are all caused by the same intolerance to gluten and are varying degrees of severity.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach start the show discussing three news articles. The two dealing with metabolism the first a study on omega-3 fatty acids found a link between a diet high in omega-3s reduced the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Another study found that 150mg of resveratrol daily lowered blood pressure as well as blood glucose levels and liver fats. Finally they discuss an article citing an increase in binge eating in men.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing a news story on the eating disorder "Pica". Where people have a odd craving for non-food items. The story certered around a young girl who had to be hospitalized after eating a light bulb. The story contended that Pica is a rare disorder however Dr. Wallach disagrees. Asserting that people who binge eat food items such as chips and junk food actually have a form of Pica.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story concerning a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The report is a widening of the guidelines for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Previously the guidelines targeted children ages 6 to 12 now under the new guidelines children ages 4 to 18 are targeted. The report also recommends drugs if behavioral interventions don't show improvement.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing gluten intolerance. Commenting that gluten is found in many products often not even called wheat but sometimes listed as "natural flavorings" or "hydrolized vegatable protein". Suggesting that if a product is in question people should call the 800 number usually listed on products.

 

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a couple whose infant was taken by CPS (child protective services). The couple took their baby to Sutter Memorial Hospital with flu like symptoms. After witnessing a nurse give the child antibiotics without a doctor ordering them. The doctors told the couple the baby needed immediate open heart surgery. Not comfortable with the diagnosis the couple took their child from that hospital to a Kaiser facility without properly checking out from Sutter. While a Kaiser police arrived after called by Sutter doctors. After seeing the child was ok and in good hands they left. A day after coming home from the hospital police arrived a the couples home with CPS in tow. Entered the home without a warrant and forcibly took the baby out of the mother's arms and CPS took the baby back to Sutter.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the growing population of gluten intolerant people. Explaining the difference between intolerance and allergies.Outlining how those who are gluten intolerant damage their small intestines in turn making them unable to absorb nutrients.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article on gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. The story outlines that one out of every 10 Americans experience heartburn at least once a week. The story offers some natural remedies for dealing with heartburn. Various methods of coating the stomach or suggesting things like baking soda to neutralize the stomach acid. Which Doc asserts is exactly 180 degrees opposite from what should be done.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a news article about how the medical system is set to start treating what they believe are impending epidemics among the "baby boomers". Doc asserts that the human body has 72 joints and that orthopedic surgeons are set to try and replace them all.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a study presented at the World Congress on Osteoarthritis. The study found that a blend of herb extracts performed better than the generic version of Celebrex at pain managment. The product contained an extract of turmeric combined with an extract of boswellia. Both have long used used as a traditional treatment of arthritis pain.
